The younger Khaledi cut his teeth for the past decade in the music business, with a job at Capitol Records. Yet for Kashy Khaledi, the son of Darioush Khaledi (the man behind Darioush Winery), the new digs make perfect sense. With midcentury modern architecture and vinyl on the turntable, Ashes & Diamonds is not your typical Napa winery. Guests at the inn enjoy a fridge stocked with artisanal products from around Sonoma county, as well as a sumptuous breakfast. Upstairs from the restaurant, SingleThread runs a five-room inn accommodations are spacious and modern in all the right ways, with giant soaking tubs and fixtures that look like works of art. Kyle, who studied in Japan, also specializes in donabe, or clay pot cooking, and these soul-warming courses are especially memorable. Without question, the most impressive course is the first one-a spread of tiny bites served in small plates and stand-alone spoons that have been laid out on a moss-covered stump. Meals at SingleThread are served kaiseki-style. Case in point: Chef Kyle Connaughton and his wife, Katina, run their own farm, and they have developed a system by which they manage 72 distinct microseasons to harvest the ripest items at any given time. The 52-seat restaurant prides itself on creating food that is as much about ancient Japanese technique as it is about fresh ingredients. It just feels like home.Farm-to-table dining meets Eastern philosophy and culture at this unparalleled Michelin-starred restaurant and inn in downtown Healdsburg. She even offered us homegrown vegetables to take home! I went to several vineyards while in Sonoma, but the Scribe experience is the one I find myself remembering fondly again and again. After a while, I felt like I was visiting a friend. Our host was most friendly and told us all about the history of the winery and of the area in general. The conversation was relaxed and informative. The standout wines were definitely the whites. The wines were served with interesting pairings of cheeses, nuts and olives. Our hosts were extremely hospitable and friendly, even brought us blankets to fight off the chilly weather. We sat in the wine cellar and enjoyed the view of softly falling rain over fields of young grapes. What a wonderful experience! Even though it was a rainy day and we were unable to enjoy our tasting out in the vineyard, the experience was by no means diminished. Coming from Louisiana, this was to be my first ever visit to an actual winery. On a recent trip to California, Scribe Winery was recommended to me by a bartender in Solvang as a "must see" vineyard. That said the atmosphere and surroundings was a 5-star experience, not the least as a result of our Hostess, who was the essence of this good feel relaxed yet fine vinyard atmosphere and she was really enthusiastic about their wines and could tell us all about the Scribe philosophy and their so far short history, which I am sure is a start of an adventure that will continue ever after. There were several different wines, one of my personal favourites was their Rose, which fitted the outdoors and weather perfectly.Ĭonclusion is the last star would have been awarded if the wine was top shelf, it probably will in the future. Our Hostess was very informative, enthusiastic and very present in her presentations, it all made us feel really good and a very enjoyable the experience. We were sitting ob the terrace just in front of the vinyards and enjoyed small snacks and their tasting menu. So welcoming, informal, relaxed and yet very knowledgable. The atmosphere reminds me of "Hotel California" by The Eagles.
